According to a telephone survey of 2,142 adults from the Pew Research Center, 81 percent say that homeownership is the best long-term investment a person can make. The survey, conducted from March 15 to March 29, found that, among homeowners who say their home is worth less now than before the recession, 37 percent strongly agree and 45 percent somewhat agree that buying a home is a smart investment. Even among renters, homeownership is seen as desirable. When renters were asked if they rent out of choice or because they cannot afford to buy a home, only 24 percent said they did so by choice and 81 percent said they’d like to buy a home in the future. Homeownership was also ranked highest among respondents’ long-term financial goals. More here.
